\\Historical Background//

Dan Deacon (August 28, 1981) is an electronic musician and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a founding member of Wham City, an artist collective. Dan Deacon has a master's degree in electro-acoustical engineering and computer composition from Suny Purchase. Focusing his sights on creating simple dance music, his body of work is composed of masterfully simplistic collages of layered sound waves.

"Spiderman of the Rings" Deacon's first album release, (voted best dance album of 2007), is attributed to creating a sense of community. One that is full of sweaty people dancing and singing and having a good time. It's fun and it's raw and crunchy and it encompasses a lo-fi, 8-bit movement that sounds as though it was recorded in his basement.
"Bromst" Deacon's sophomore album, was recorded in Whitefish, Montana at Snowghost Studios. It is interestingly a house converted into a recording studio with the main mixing suite in the basement. Whitefish is significant because it's a completely isolated place, far far away from Baltimore, Maryland. It's a place you go to think and compose and I believe the studio was engineered for those specific reasons. I think it adds an interesting element to the album, it sounds like it was recorded inside someone's head while they were away from home and deep in thought.

"Bromst" was released on March 24, 2009 on Carpark Records. It has received great reviews from the music critic powers that be. The main arguments involving this album say that this is a completely different side of Dan Deacon, but I don't agree. I think this album is Deacon with a master's degree, I think he has extended more of himself in this album. It is still a dance album, and even though the rhythms are complex, one just has to find the right one to dance too. And there is your community, friends.

"For the last three years Dan Deacon has been working on Bromst. Fusing together the growing intensity of his live performances with his background in electro-acoustic composition, the outcome is a collection of pieces that are intense and epic and at the same time down to earth and welcoming. Bromst embodies the same energy and excitement as Spiderman of the Rings, however the craftsmanship and composition on Bromst have a wider scope and richer palette." [PR]

"Snookered" is the piece we are going to analyze, it is the fourth song featured on "Bromst" and has been said to be the new "Wham City," the most loved anthem from "Spiderman of the Rings." Snookered is an older sibling of Wham City containing insight, and looking forward.

"Unlike the completely electronic Spiderman of the Rings, the instrumentation on Bromst is a mixture of acoustic instruments, mechanical instruments, samples and electronics. The player piano, marimba, glockenspiel, vibraphone, live drums, winds and brass give Bromst a much richer tone than his previous work. The intricate and complex parts, skillfully executed by the performers, are woven together into a rich, dense, noisy dance pop that has become Dan Deacon's signature sound." [PR]
